2023/2024
The event that founded our society. A week of donations and fundraising led a group of UoL students in May to make and distribute 50 care packages to the homeless in Leicester City Centre.
The Humanitarian Society's first-ever freshers fair stall, it was a fantastic opportunity to engage with people, have meaningful conversations, and spread awareness about the various causes we support. We had a great time connecting with individuals, exchanging ideas, and giving out freebies to promote our society and educate people on the social issues we plan on tackling.
Our first event as a society was a games night with a chance to meet the committee in a relaxed social setting. Card games and board games were played. Free pizza was served with a game of musical chairs and many, many puzzles
To kick off the new term, our Stress Less Workshop was an event full of wellness tips, destressing activities and advice from yoga instructor and wellness coach, Amina Khan.
For some community action, on November the 15th, we hosted a Palestinian Culture Night filled with educational talks, fun games, poetry, food, an auction and a talk by our guest speaker, Karen Wildin on her activism and work with Palestine Action. .
In the wintery cold month of December, we had a trip to a food bank, an informative talk by Bruce Harrison (Operational Manager at Leicester South Foodbank) and a festive movie night to help students clear out their cupboards before they went home for the holidays.
To kick off the second semester we had a stall at both the main campus refreshers event and the volunteering fair, advertising roles on our newsletter and podcast team. Talked to a lot of interesting people, decorated plant pots and gave out some goodies.
In collaboration with the Debate Society, we discussed whether women should be granted menstrual leave.
With the help of Freedom4Girls, we hosted an informative talk on period poverty as we shed light on the challenges faced by millions of individuals and discussed actionable solutions. We also hosted a bake sale to raise funds for menstrual hygiene products for women in Gaza.
This Valentine's day we collaborated with the Arts and Crafts Society in making and selling home-crafted jewellery. The money raised went towards buying the essential items for the packs we handed out at our annual homeless drive.
Back to the event that started this whole thing, we were so happy to announce that we will continue our annual homeless drive this year and hopefully it will be far bigger and better than last year!
